Child & Adolescent Treatment
There’s no doubt that childhood is a tumultuous time, but when a child or adolescent is also battling a mental health disorder, it can be extraordinarily difficult – for the youth as well as their loved ones.
We take a family-centric approach here at RIVIA. We understand the importance of helping a young person appropriately understand and process a condition they’re grappling with. Because mental health can impact the entire family, we also know how important it is to work with family members to make sure the entire family unit receives the care, support, and treatment they need.
In addition to our mental health treatment specific to children and adolescents, we also offer parenting skills, which can be beneficial for all parents – those who have children with or without mental health issues.
Mental Health Treatment for Kids & Teens
Many of the same mental health issues that impact adults can affect children and adolescents, too. When it does, it not only causes disruptions in your child’s life and the lives of family members, it can also impact your child’s growth and development. It can interrupt schooling, inhibit proper socialization, and lead to a crisis of self-esteem or other issues. This is why it is critical that when young people have mental health needs, it is identified and treated as early as possible.
At RIVIA, we treat children and adolescents with the following mental health needs (and more):
Warning Signs in Children and Adolescents
So, what is considered normal trials and tribulations of growing up – and what might be signs of a mental health issue that requires treatment? When it comes to children and adolescents, it can be difficult to tell on your own. Fortunately, mental health experts can help you tell the difference. Some of the warning signs of mental health problems in young people include:
- Abnormal sleeping patterns – too much or too little
- Difficulty in school
- Drug use
- Excessive talk of worries or fear
- Extreme, out-of-proportion emotional responses
- Frequent tantrums or acting out
- Hearing voices telling them what to do
- Increased irritability
- Loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy
- Physical complaints with no known cause (stomachaches, headaches)
- Repetitive behaviors
- Social isolation
- Sudden change in grades or behavior
- Suicidal thoughts
Because mental health issues in kids can be hard to identify, it’s important to make sure your child has someone they can talk to, in confidence, to be sure that no serious problems are left undiagnosed. With an in-office or telehealth visit, we can help you determine if further help is needed. Our therapists are skilled in listening to children and adolescents and providing a supportive and non-judgmental environment in which they feel safe to share.
