Student Nurse Practitioners
Our accomplished group of nurse practitioner students are available to see patients for low-cost therapy sessions under the direction and supervision of our more experienced clinicians.
Jacob Barela, Student Nurse Practitioner
Jacob was born and raised in Southern Idaho. After volunteering as a health volunteer with the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps, he moved to New York City. Jacob received respective master degrees in public health and nursing from Columbia University. He has worked as a Registered Nurse in Oncology and Psychiatry. He is currently studying Psychiatric Nursing at New York University. In his free time, Jacob enjoys baking desserts, singing karaoke, and petting his friends’ pets.

Abigail Bruno, Student Nurse Practitioner
Abigail Bruno attends NYU where she is studying to be a Psychiatric Mental-Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). Prior to this, she earned bachelors degrees in Integrative Neuroscience (Fordham University, 2017) and Nursing (NYU, 2019). As a nurse, she has worked in outpatient Psychiatry, Cardiothoracic ICU, COVID ICU, and Noninvasive Cardiology. Her research interests include the influence of epigenetics on mental health. As a PMHNP student, Abigail brings empathy, an easygoing communication style, and a sweet sense of humor. In her free time, she enjoys playing tennis and participating in community outreach programs.

Lu Li-Herrera, Student Nurse Practitioner
Xiaolu (Lu) Li-Herrera is originally from the Northern Central Region of China. She graduated from Hunter Bellevue School of Nursing with high awards under the Dean’s list. After working as a Critical Care Float Nurse at a Level I trauma hospital for several years, she further advanced her career at New York University. She is expecting to graduate from the PMHNP program in 2023. Lu’s theoretical orientation is Person-Centered Therapy as she strongly believes that everyone has the capacity and desire for positive personal change and growth in a supportive environment. She incorporates music therapy and meditation into her plan of care in an open and safe environment.
